A cheap but good experience in Second Life

I recently took it upon myself to build the cheapest computer I could, to get the maximum performance out of Second Life, and decided it might be a good idea to write it out here.

So, the system I settled on, is fairly simple, and very straight forward

An AMD A6-3500 APU, a nice 2.1 GHz tricore CPU, with dual AMD 6530D graphics on the chip (79.99)

A pair of 4Gb DDR3 1600 dimms from Gskill (46.99)

A Gigabyte A55M-DS2  motherboard (59.99)

A no name 350 watt PSU (15.99)

A 160Gb S.A.T.A. 3.0Gb/sec HDD (74.99, damn floods)

A S.A.T.A. DVD ROM drive (18.99)

Windows 7 x64 (99.99) optional, an old copy of XP or linux are both viable to cut costs here

System total 397.99 with shipping (TRI In benchmarks)

For comparison, I will be using the following system

AMD Phenom II X6 1075T @3.4 GHZ (199.99)

16GB DDR3 (93.98)

60GB Corsair SSD x2 raid 0 (88.99 x2)

XFX radeon 6870 1GB (174.99)

ASUS M4A87TD-EVO Motherboard (116.99)

1000 watt Silverstone psu (203.99)

S.A.T.A. DVD ROM drive (18.99)

Windows 7 x64 (99.99)

System cost ~1086.90 (HEX in benchmark)

Note: I didnt include a case, as it is a very personal choice and can vary widely in price

 Settings used for the tests:

Now, here are the benchmark results

As you can see, Compared to a system at 2.5x the cost the APU based system stands up pretty well, providing a very sufficient experince in this virtual world, as well as being a competent gaming machine.

Also Wilson is a better actor than  Kristen Stewart, signifigantly more emotional connection.

A miniskirt and a texan

A beautiful young woman in a short, tight mini skirt was waiting at a crowded bus stop. When the bus arrived and she attempted to get on, she found her skirt was too tight to allow her foot to come up to the height of the first step. Slightly embarrassed, and with a shy smile to the bus driver, she reached behind her to unzip the skirt a little, figuring that would give it enough slack that she could make the step. But it didn’t. So she reached back and unzipped it a little more. Still no luck.

Now thoroughly embarrassed, she reached behind her and unzipped it all the way. But, much to her chagrin, she still couldn’t lift her leg high enough to step up onto the bus. Just then a large Texan who was standing behind her in line wrapped his arm around her waist and lifted her gently onto the bus.

She went ballistic and turned to the would-be Samaritan yelling, “How dare you touch my body? I don’t even know who you are!” The Texan smiled and drawled, “Well ma’am, normally I would agree with you, but after you unzipped my fly three times, I kinda figured we was friends!”

Morning all, hope your festive season is treating you well. It's been a while since I was active here, and with the seasonal 8 hours of light, I this I will come back and see it if anyone's still out there, the site is back on Squarespace and the look is updated some, so keep an eye out.

Oh, and happily enough they finally fixed one of my major gripes, the Android app is out now!
